Curriculum Overview

CURRICULUM

Our curriculum builds skills progressively, moving between theory and practice. Lecture, practical work, role-play, and evaluation form a continuous cycle that develops genuine, lasting capability. Every stage is designed as practical, small-group butler training, so you can systematically acquire the knowledge and refined technique required of a professional butler.

HOW WE TEACH

The Learning Cycle

Learning Cycle

Learning at the Academy does not stop at listening. Students understand through theory, test through practice, and refine through role-play — repeating this cycle until the skill is truly mastered. Each course progressively raises the level of challenge, guiding students steadily towards professional competence.

STEP 01

Lecture (Theory)

Lecture

Using association-supervised textbooks, students build a systematic understanding of butler history, etiquette, and hospitality theory. This stage lays the essential knowledge foundation.

STEP 02

Practical Work (Exercises)

Practice

What is covered in the lecture is put into practice immediately in small-group sessions. Students work through repeated drills — from table setting to wine service — under instructor guidance.

STEP 03

Role-Playing

Role-Play

In a studio designed to simulate private residences and hotels, students recreate realistic scenarios, playing roles with each other and with the instructor to develop adaptable, real-world responsiveness.

STEP 04

Evaluation & Feedback

Evaluation

Instructors observe each student's technique and responses in detail, providing individual feedback. Identifying areas for improvement and feeding that into the next session creates a continuous cycle of growth.

This cycle is repeated across each course, with difficulty rising progressively at every stage.Course Comparison

FOUR PILLARS

Four Pillars of the Curriculum

Four Pillars

The curriculum rests on four pillars: practical training, systematised study materials, a clear map of skills to acquire, and structured progress assessment. Each pillar reinforces the others, building all-round professional capability.

About Assessment & Progress Tracking

A dedicated Assessment & Progress page is currently in preparation. In the meantime, instructors provide individual feedback after each practical session within each course, supporting students' gradual growth. The full page will be published on this website in due course.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Not at all. Everything covered in a lecture is immediately put into practice through hands-on exercises and role-play, then refined through instructor feedback — a continuous loop of theory and application.

Yes. Students use textbooks supervised by the Association. The number of volumes varies by course, and graduates can continue to use them as reference materials after completing their studies.

Students build skills progressively — from foundational techniques and table service through to wine knowledge, crisis management, and management capability. Please see the Skills Map for full details.

Classes are held on weekends, with in-person sessions of six hours per day (four 90-minute sessions). Alongside the in-person classes, we use a hybrid format that combines on-demand preparation and review videos, so that in-person time can focus on hands-on practice and role-play. The schedule allows you to study in a planned way while continuing to work.

Yes. We keep to a strictly small-group format, with a maximum of six students per class (a minimum of three to run). This size lets instructors check each student's technique and responses in detail and give individual feedback on the spot — so you can carefully build the refined bearing expected of a butler.

Completion requires an attendance rate of 80% or above. At the end of each course, a written examination (30 minutes) and a practical examination are held, and successful students are awarded certification from The All Japan Butler Association. If you do not pass the practical examination, you may retake it once free of charge.

In the Advanced and Master courses, students themselves experience fine-hotel dinners and afternoon tea as guests, observing and learning professional technique first-hand. This connects what is learned in lectures and practical sessions with a genuine feel for the real setting.
