Butler Bell
HEAD OF THE ASSOCIATION
Butler Bell is the name under which Yuichi Ishii, head of the association, stands as a butler, and the name of his official site. His guiding idea is that hospitality is only real when a caring heart and sound technique come together.
Around that idea he continues to research and write on butler culture, to lecture and train, and to appear in the media. Much of the why that academy students learn in class traces back to his words.
WHO HE IS
One person who joined the Western butler and Japanese hospitality
Profile
Spreading and teaching as president
As head of the association, Butler Bell works to spread and develop butler culture in Japan. What he pursues is a new form of the butler in which the British way of the profession and the Japanese sense of hospitality are melted into one.
Heart shown in movement, and shared
Put the care for the other person first and express it in refined deportment; then share what you learn day by day in research and practice rather than keeping it to yourself.
His site is built from these two attitudes: Butler Wisdom as reading, YouTube as film, and a note journal as a daily record, all born of the same stance.
The source of the words used in class
When the academy teaches what a butler is, the source of its words is the thinking Butler Bell has spoken. For a student the site is also the place to check, in words, the why behind the deportment the body has already learned in class.

THE DECISION
The person who opened a closed door from the inside
Opening the door from within
Towards an age of choosing your butler
When he took up the office of head in March 2023, the first phrase Butler Bell raised was that butlers had entered an age of being chosen.
Until then the association had kept to a custom of butlers never stepping forward and meeting only clients who came with a trusted introduction.
That pride had long been the spine of the organization, but it also meant that a person who needed a butler could not find one alone.
Show the roster, do not hide the cost
Show who is serving on a roster, stop hiding the cost, and create an entrance that anyone can use without an introduction. The path Butler Bell chose was to open, with his own hands, a door that had long been shut.
In February 2025 he incorporated the association and took the post of representative director.
He does not hide that opinions split
He does not hide that opinion within the association divided over this.
What both sides wanted to protect was the same, he says, and the pride of those who left is also something the association inherited; on that understanding he chose this path in order to pass the work of the butler to the next hundred years.
The academy effort to be a place of learning open to anyone lies on the extension of that decision.

FOUR ROLES
Head, researcher, teacher, narrator: the four faces of Butler Bell
What he does
His site presents his activity in four parts, and every one of them is continuous with the education at the academy.

As head of the association
He leads the whole activity of the association in order to raise butler skill and secure the social standing of the profession.
The association was founded in 1890 and became a legal entity on 19 February 2025; his corporate title is representative director.

As a researcher of butler culture
He keeps exploring an original style that overlays Japanese hospitality on Western butler culture, and publishes what he finds as Butler Wisdom, on the Butler Bell YouTube channel and in his note journal.

As a teacher
At the request of companies and organizations he gives lectures and training on hospitality and manners, proposing programmes reshaped for each audience.

As a narrator
He appears on television and radio and in magazines and web media, and supervises programmes and articles on butlers. The range of subjects he can speak on, from table manners to business manners and hospitality, is wide.
FOUR PRINCIPLES
Heart, craft, growth, fusion: four principles in his words
Heart, craft, growth, fusion
First: the spirit of hospitality
Butler Bell states his principles in four phrases. The first is the spirit of hospitality: care for the other person is the source of the finest service; stand in their place, sense what they want, and deliver a little beyond what they expected.
Complete technique, and constant growth
The second is perfect technique: heart alone does not make real service, and the deportment must be backed by sound knowledge and skill. The third is continuous growth: the road of the butler has no end, and learning and self-training must not stop.
The fourth: a blending of cultures
The fourth is the fusion of cultures: join the Western butler culture with Japanese hospitality and create new value that honours tradition while answering the needs of the present.
The academy curriculum is these four principles rearranged into something that can actually be practised in a classroom.
In terms of academy classes
Heart corresponds to the classes on observation and speech, craft to the practical work of service and deportment, growth to the three-tier course and certification structure, and fusion to a syllabus that studies Japanese courtesy and Western protocol side by side.

THE BOOK
A Gakken reference for attire and deportment
A supervised reference
Supervising the Gakken illustrated book
His site introduces the illustrated book on butler manners and culture published by Gakken and supervised by the All Japan Butler Association. It organizes the attire, the bearing and the history of the butler with illustrations.
A shared reference for dress and manner
The academy treats this book as the shared reference for attire and deportment. Daytime formal dress is a black morning coat with a plain black long necktie and a grey waistcoat; the most formal evening dress is tails with a white bow tie.
The rules of dress taught in class are aligned with the supervised content.
For the contents, see the official site
For the book itself, see the Book page on this site and the Butler Bell official site.

BUTLER WISDOM
Using Butler Wisdom to prepare for and review classes
Four categories of wisdom
Butler Wisdom, which he has written from more than twenty years of experience, is arranged in four categories. The academy recommends reading it before and after class. Here is which category overlaps with which lessons.
- 01
The spirit of hospitality
The category on the essence of hospitality and service, giving the grounds for standing in the other person place and sensing a need before being asked. Good preparation for the observation classes.
- 02
Formal manners
Table manners, rules of dress and conduct in social settings. It overlaps with the foundation subjects of the Essential course.
- 03
Butler skills
Observation, planning, speech, attending to VIPs, use of time. The background to the skills handled in the Advanced and Master courses.
- 04
Everyday elegance
Posture, speech, tidiness. Ways of keeping dignity in daily life that are useful even if you are not a butler.

WHY WE INTRODUCE HIM
Butler Bell, seen from the academy
The person behind the teaching
His position as head of the association
Butler Bell leads the association from which the academy grew. What is taught here about the butler and about hospitality is rooted in what he has said in his own words and practised with his own body.
Learn it in the body, then in words
In the classroom, the angle of a bow and the reason for moving before being asked are learned first with the body. His Butler Wisdom, YouTube channel and note journal attach words to that bodily memory.
Why that angle, why move first: the questions raised in class usually have an answer somewhere on his site.

HOW TO USE THE SITE
How a student can use the Butler Bell site
For learners at each stage
Academy classes and Butler Bell writing complement each other. Here are four ways to use the site, by stage.
When you are unsure about enrolling
His articles on the definition and origin of the word butler and the reality of the profession in Japan give you material for deciding whether to pursue it.
When a class raises a why
The four categories of Butler Wisdom supply, in words, the background to the deportment your body has learned.
After graduating and starting work
His principle that the road of the butler has no end supports graduates who keep practising after they leave.
When a company considers training
Lectures and training on hospitality and manners can be requested through his site. Some companies combine them with the academy corporate training.
GLOSSARY
Four words from the Butler Bell site
Four terms from the Butler Bell site
For a student opening the Butler Bell site for the first time, here are the meanings of four words that keep coming up.

Butler Wisdom
The collective name for the pieces Butler Bell has written from more than twenty years of experience, in four categories: hospitality, formal manners, butler skills and everyday elegance.

Journal
His day-to-day record published on note. If YouTube is film, the journal is text: two channels born of the same stance.

Butler supervision
Checking that butlers are portrayed correctly in television, magazine and web productions. Butler Bell takes this on alongside media appearances.

Head
The title of the person leading the association and his main office. In corporate terms, representative director.
READING THE SITE
Reading the Butler Bell site alongside your classes
How to pair the site with your classes
The site is arranged as profile, activities, Butler Wisdom, services and media. We suggest students read the profile first for the head thinking, then dip into Butler Wisdom in step with the progress of their course.
During Essential, read formal manners and everyday elegance; from Advanced onward, butler skills; and throughout, the spirit of hospitality. The four categories map neatly onto the three academy courses.
The services and media pages are material for seeing how far the work of a butler reaches into society: lectures and training, supervision of programmes. Check here how butler knowledge is used outside the classroom.

FROM THE INSTRUCTORS
How the instructors use Butler Bell words
Bell words in the classroom
Academy instructors use the four principles as tools in class: perfect technique when teaching deportment, the spirit of hospitality when teaching observation, continuous growth for students near the end of the course.
The principles are not posters on a wall but words spoken in daily practice.
The line the instructors value most is that heart alone does not make real service. Feeling that does not reach the hands does not reach the guest. That idea is why the academy gives so much time to repeating practical work.
At the same time, instructors pass on the phrase about an age of being chosen. Opening the closed door was the head decision; being chosen beyond it depends on each person practice.

COMMON MISREADINGS
What people assume about Butler Bell
Assumptions people bring to him
The first is that Butler Bell is the name of a company. It is the name of a person, the name under which the association head Yuichi Ishii works as a butler, and the name of his official site.
The second is that you can hire a butler through his site. The desk for bringing a butler into a home or company is THE BUTLER, run by the association. What his site accepts are requests for lectures, training and media appearances.
The third is that Butler Wisdom is only for aspiring butlers. Everyday elegance and formal manners are written to be useful to anyone; you can recommend them to family and friends as they are.

HIS CLASSROOM
The quiet of the room on the days he teaches
Short instructions, long demonstrations
A classroom without a raised voice
On the days the principal teaches, the room is quieter than usual, because he never raises his voice. Instructions are short and demonstrations are long.
More time goes to copying something performed once in front of you than to listening to an explanation. The belief that showing the shape is faster than exhausting words is built into the lesson itself.
Corrections arrive one point at a time
Corrections arrive in a particular way. Nothing is rejected wholesale; one thing to change is named. Told to raise the hand slightly, the learner fixes that alone and runs it again. The moment it lands, the next single point is handed over.
Because of that pacing, learners never lose track of what they can already do and what comes next.
Close with a good shape, not with words
Impressions are rarely asked for at the end. Instead comes a question: shall we run it once more? Practice is not something you close with words; you close it by leaving a good shape in the body.
Learners pick up that way of finishing without being told.

WORDS HE REPEATS
Phrases that come back term after term
Three lines learners write down
Move before the other hand stops
The same phrases return across terms. One is: move before the other hand stops. Moving once asked is already late; the work is to remove the need to ask.
Learners first hear it as an attitude and realise later, as practice deepens, that it was a concrete instruction about watching eyes and hands.
Rather than doing it well, do it the same
Another is: rather than doing it well, do it the same. A movement whose quality changes by the day is, to the person receiving it, an unreadable one.
Narrowing the gap between your good days and bad days comes before raising your ceiling, and that order of priority is contained in the line.
Settle what cannot be seen first
The third is: settle what cannot be seen before you step forward. It points at the arrangement of the back room, the direction things face on a tray, everything outside the guest's view.
Visible movement is only the result of invisible preparation, and this is the sentence he says most often.
