THE BUTLER

BUTLER SERVICE RUN BY THE ASSOCIATION

THE BUTLER is how the butlers the association raises and certifies actually reach homes and companies. The deportment repeated in the academy classroom is ultimately tested in the field of this service. Where do graduates work, and how?

Here is THE BUTLER as an extension of learning.

WHAT IT IS

Not housekeeping, not a maid service: a butler, delivered

What sets it apart

For households and companies alike

THE BUTLER is the butler service the association runs. It serves both households and companies.

Kitchen and laundry are part of it, but so are receiving visitors, secretarial tasks, arranging cars and hospitality at the office: the corners of daily life and work are all within its reach.

How it differs from housekeeping or a maid

The name and the substance differ from housekeeping or a maid service. What makes the difference is an attitude: understand the rhythm of the household, prepare before you are asked, and disappear while you are not needed.

The greatest share of academy class time goes to developing that bodily sense of anticipating and withdrawing.

From free consultation to the day itself

A request begins with a free consultation and moves as soon as you name the date, time and situation you want to hand over.

A dedicated coordinator proposes a butler and a form of contract to suit, and on the day a butler in formal attire appears quietly and on time.

From the learner side, the preparation that leads up to that quiet appearance is the substance of the lessons.

THREE FIELDS

Home, work and special days: the three fields a butler works in

Home, work, occasions

THE BUTLER sorts its work into three fields. The Essential, Advanced and Master courses at the academy are arranged to correspond, in order, to these three settings.

A butler at work in household management (THE BUTLER)
01

Keeping the house

Cleaning, laundry and cooking, along with looking after children and the daily shopping. A dedicated butler who has absorbed the rhythm of the house takes over what you cannot reach, housekeeping knowledge included.

The basic deportment of the Essential course becomes daily work here.

A butler supporting an executive (THE BUTLER)
02

Supporting the business

Secretarial work, sorting expenses, arranging trips, preparing meetings, driving. The butler takes on the incidental tasks around an executive so that the executive can concentrate on decisions.

Butlers with experience across industries act as the right hand, and the planning skill of the Advanced course comes into play.

03

Dressing the special day

Birthdays, weddings, corporate ceremonies. From setting up the venue to receiving guests, serving, running the programme and giving a talk on manners, the butler sees it through.

In tails, at the most formal occasions, the protocol and crisis handling of the Master course become the support.

FOR COMPANIES

A bow at reception decides the impression of a company

THE BUTLER for Business

The for Business framework

For companies there is a separate frame called THE BUTLER for Business. Reception, tea in the meeting room, serving at receptions. THE BUTLER holds that the part a butler bearing plays in a corporate setting is far larger than the visible workload.

The hand that offers a business card, the sound of a cup set down, the way one stands: details accumulate into the conviction, in a visitor, that this company is different.

From a single day to a yearly contract

Contracts run from a single spot day to a full year, and the duties on offer are broad: reception and doorman work, serving, tea butler, hospitality at VIP events, and manners instruction delivered on site.

The one constant is that the butler in charge belongs to the association.

Corporate training hands over field manners

The academy corporate training exists to pass the deportment required in these settings to company staff.

The reason its programmes are split by industry, hotels, residences, finance, luxury retail, clinics, automotive, chauffeur, is that they copy directly the experience THE BUTLER has built up on corporate floors.

Trust earned in the home holds on the company floor

A sense of confidentiality sharpened in households that handle information about assets, together with pride in formal attire. A butler with both can serve with the same dignity in a corporate setting.

HOW A REQUEST MOVES

From the first call to the day, in four stages

The flow of a request

A request moves through four stages, and at every one of them the client only has to state a wish. Academy graduates stand at the very end of the flow, as the butler who appears at the appointed hour.

  1. 01

    Ask

Tell the association desk the date and time you have in mind and the situation you want to entrust. Home or business, either is fine, and the consultation costs nothing.

  2. 02

Choose a butler and a form of contract

A dedicated coordinator presents a butler and a contract plan suited to what you described. A day butler for a single day, or a private butler on a standing basis: you only have to choose from the candidates.

  3. 03

Let the coordinator assemble the day

Venue, programme and the butler attire are settled by the coordinator, checked against etiquette. The client does not need to work out the logistics.

  4. 04

On the day, the butler appears

At the appointed hour an association butler waits quietly. Prepared in advance, withdrawn when not needed. The deportment honed in the classroom meets a client for the first time here.

CHOOSE YOUR BUTLER

Something new: choosing a butler from a roster

A published roster

The roster is published

One distinctive feature of THE BUTLER is that the roster of serving butlers is public and the client chooses. For a long time the association kept to a custom in which butlers stayed out of sight and met clients only through a trusted introduction.

In 2023 the office of head passed to Yuichi Ishii (Butler Bell), who changed that custom from within: the roster was published, fees were made visible and a desk was opened for enquiries from people who have no introduction.

The roster names what each butler is good at

Each butler on the roster has their own strengths and history. Butlers strong in running a household, butlers who have supported executives across several industries, butlers who have served and run many banquets.

The client chooses one to suit the situation, in consultation with the coordinator.

For learners, a target they can see

For an academy student the roster is a visible goal: to be certified, to put your own name and strengths forward, and to be chosen by a client. The practice in the classroom exists for that day.

FOUR SCENES

Four scenes where classroom practice becomes the job

Where the lessons are tested

Of the situations THE BUTLER describes, here are four that correspond one to one with academy classes, with a note of which course supplies what.

01

Daily life in a residence

Planning housework, preparing the table, receiving visitors. The basic deportment of the Essential course becomes the daily routine, unchanged.

02

Beside an executive

Secretarial work, travel arrangements, meeting preparation, driving. The planning and language of the Advanced course are what is asked for.

03

Anniversaries and dinners

From building the venue to serving and running the evening. At formal occasions in tails, the protocol and handling of the unexpected from the Master course are what you lean on.

04

Company reception

Reception, doorman duty, tea, hospitality at VIP events. Acting as the face of a company, to the same standard as the academy corporate training.

WHY WE INTRODUCE IT

THE BUTLER, seen from the academy

The field at the end of the lessons

Under the same association

THE BUTLER and the academy sit under the same association. The academy raises, the association recognizes, THE BUTLER delivers.

Because the three are joined inside one organization, there is no gap between the deportment taught in class and the deportment demanded on the job.

What happens on site returns to class

Academy instructors bring back to class what happened in the field: how they moved when a guest arrived early, what they put first when they noticed a single piece of silver missing from the table.

Judgment that is in no textbook can be learned because of this connection.

For those who want to hire, and to work

If you want to engage a butler, go to THE BUTLER official site. If you want to work as one, go to the academy course guide. The doors differ, but they open onto the same butler culture of one association.

FROM CLASS TO CLIENT

The day a bow rehearsed a hundred times first meets a client

What graduates carry into the field

Movements repeated hundreds of times

At the academy the act of receiving a guest is repeated dozens, then hundreds of times. The angle of the door, the depth of the bow, the position of the hands taking a coat.

Each is a small thing, yet in the field the first few seconds fix the impression of the whole day.

Movements rehearsed scene by scene

Pouring tea, handling a napkin, pressing a garment, helping someone in and out of a car, holding an umbrella in the rain. The deportment rehearsed scene by scene is the very work THE BUTLER undertakes in homes and at ceremonies.

Nothing needs translating between learning and practice.

The fact of having learned to the standard

When a graduate stands in the field, the fact of having learned to the association standard supports the client trust. Sending out only butlers who can live up to that trust is a responsibility the academy takes as its own.

GLOSSARY

THE BUTLER words, read in the words of learning

Four terms to know before you enquire

The THE BUTLER site uses its own terms for contracts and duties. Here they are mapped to academy classes.

A butler preparing tea (THE BUTLER)
01

Day butler

A contract in which a butler is engaged for a single day. Often chosen for a first request, and often the first field an academy graduate stands in.

A butler supporting schedule management (THE BUTLER)
02

Private butler

A contract in which a butler serves one household or person exclusively. The way of working that asks most of a butler: knowing the rhythm of the house and anticipating it.

Hands preparing for an anniversary (THE BUTLER)
03

Dedicated coordinator

The person who assembles everything from the request to the day, proposing the butler and the form of contract and settling the details. The client need not plan because this person does.

A butler attending a VIP at a corporate event (THE BUTLER)
04

for Business

The name of the corporate frame: reception and doorman duties, serving, tea butler, VIP events, on-site manners instruction and the other duties a butler takes on in a company.

READING THE SITE

Reading the official site in order: services, roster, fees

A reading order for the official site

The THE BUTLER site moves from a description of the service to the roster of serving butlers, then to fees and the flow of a request.

We suggest students first grasp the three fields under Services, then read the roster to see which situations the senior butlers are strongest in.

The roster page is the most useful place for picturing yourself after graduation. Each entry lists strengths and background, and it shows concretely which field to develop in order to become a butler who is chosen.

Read the fees and request pages from the point of view of someone hiring a butler. What do they want to know, where do they hesitate? Knowing that is also practice for anticipating a client wishes in the field.

FROM THE INSTRUCTORS

What the instructors bring back from the THE BUTLER field

What the field teaches the classroom

Many academy instructors have stood in the THE BUTLER field themselves.

The stories of mistakes and judgment told in class come from there, not from a textbook: what to put first when a guest arrived early, how to move on noticing something missing from the table.

The biggest thing the instructors learned in the field is that deportment which goes unnoticed is worth more than deportment which is correct. In the field, the more a butler stands out, the less the hospitality is worth.

That sense can only be acquired through practice in the classroom.

That is why instructors ask students to practise while imagining the field: whose house, what guest, what hour, which room. The scenes on the THE BUTLER service pages are material for that imagination.

COMMON MISREADINGS

What THE BUTLER is often taken for

Where the service is misread

The first is that THE BUTLER is another name for housekeeping. It does take on housework, but one butler also handles visitors, secretarial work, driving and corporate hospitality, and serves in the attitude of preparing before being asked.

That is the decisive difference.

The second is the belief that you cannot nominate a butler. The roster of serving butlers is public and the client chooses in consultation with the coordinator, a mechanism put in place since 2023.

The third is that companies cannot use it. There is a corporate frame called for Business, from a single day to an annual contract, with duties suited to the company floor: reception, doorman, serving, VIP events and instruction delivered on site.

A butler receiving a first-time client (THE BUTLER)

BEFORE THE FIRST CALL

The last rehearsal before a first assignment

What we check the night before

A final rehearsal before the first day

Before a graduate stands in front of a client for the first time, we run one final rehearsal. Nothing new is taught in it. We watch how they halt before the door, how loudly they give their name, the half step they keep when walking ahead.

The only question is whether movements repeated a hundred times still come out the same shape in a nervous body.

On day one, do not try to do it well

The line every instructor says at that point is: do not try to do it well today. Nerves make movements larger and faster, which is exactly what draws attention.

Since going unnoticed is the quality of the work, the task on day one is simply to repeat what was taught, small and quiet.

What to do without an answer

The other thing we hand over is what to do without an answer. Do not paper over not knowing: say that you will check, and come back. Whether that single round trip is possible decides more about a first day than any technique.

We teach it as a manner of honesty, not a skill.

WHAT THE FIELD SENDS BACK

Requests from the field rewrite the following term

The curriculum is not a fixed script

The curriculum is not a script

What we teach is not a script fixed once and left alone. What clients actually asked for travels back through the instructors, and the weighting of the next term shifts.

Recently, work in meeting rooms and reception has grown, and the hours given to where to stand in a reception room and how to hand over documents have visibly thickened.

The foundations never move

Some parts never move. The depth of a bow, the handling of vessels, stride and footfall. The demand on these foundations never drops whatever the request, so every term drills them hard in the first block.

Foundations fixed, applications reallocated by what the field reports: that is the design of the classroom.

Reverse engineered from real requests

What matters for learners is that the practice in front of them is reverse engineered from situations that were actually asked for, not from imagined ones.

Seen from the learning side, that round trip is the clearest evidence that classroom and workplace are continuous.
